PAX2009 12" £2.85

Peace Feast, the most slothful record label in ‘dance’ music history finally get round to releasing a record in 2001, but hang on a minute, hasn’t this been out before? Oh yeah, back in April 1999 and even then it was a remix of a track originally put out in 1994… So what’s goin on then, are you being ripped off or what? Well, not really, ‘cos before we put out their first new release proper, we’re using a large export order that required a re-press as an excuse to offer a limited amount of copies.

‘Super Rappin’ No. 5’ is a new mix of ‘Super Rappin’ No. 3’ which originally

appeared on ‘Disco Inserts Vol 1’ back in 1994. It’s a ‘Chic’ style disco

groove crossed with ‘King of the Beats’. The flipside contains a mix by DIY’s

Nail of ‘Nu Folk Sound’, a bubblin’ tune full of electro beats, strange mantras

and eastern promise.

SINCE THE ORIGINAL RELEASE NAIL WENT ON TO BECOME HALF OF BENT & TIM ‘LOVE’ LEE HAS BECOME SORT OF FAMOUS, HAVING RELEASED A STRING OF SUCCESSFUL SINGLES AND THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED LP ‘JUST CALL ME ‘LONE’ LEE…’ AS WELL AS MODELLING A RANGE OF TASTY UNDERPANTS IN A RECENT ISSUE OF JOCKEY SLUT.

TONE:13 5027803041318 CD £4.25

4 new tracks from the 3 audio artists who make up the forthcoming Touch Tour [UK, May 2001]. All are exclusive tracks recorded specifically for this CD,released for the tour.

Taking the everyday world as source material and inspiration, the three international collaborations between electronic sound artists and visual artists present a vivid introduction to the work of Touch, the ground-breaking audio-visual label, in its twentieth year.

Hazard [Benny Jonas Nilsen, Sweden] - has recorded albums for the Swedish dark industrial label, Cold Meat Industry, and Ash International [Ash 4.5 and 5.5]. His forthcoming album, Wind [Ash 6.5], draws on recordings made by Chris Watson. Hazard's compositions evoke extreme climatic conditions and the perception of time and space as experienced through sound. Filmic in scope, his environmental sounds take the listener to another place, sending images cascading through the mind and captivating in an almost hypnotic way. "Soundtracks for spaces where, for a while, humans have not trodden." - (Vital, The Netherlands).

Fennesz [Christian Fennesz, Austria] - has made two solo recordings for Touch and two for Mego, including Endless Summer, to be released in May. Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sounds of enormous range and complex musicality.

"Imagine the electric guitar severed from cliché and all of its physical limitations, shaping a bold new musical language." - (City Newspaper, USA).

His lush and luminous computer experiments are emotive digital compositions. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences.

Biosphere [Geir Jenssen, Norway] - recorded Cirque for Touch in 2000 and in May is releasing Substrata 2; a remastering of his 1997 classic, 'Substrata' and a bonus CD with two tracks from the Japanese edition [unreleased in the west], and 'A Man with a Camera', 9 unreleased compositions from the soundtrack for the movie of the same name, first shown at the International Film Festival in Tromso in 1997.

Biosphere's music is an intimate reflection of the space and climate of his Arctic base in Tromso. "The music draws you in and makes you want to listen and feel. It acts on a very emotional level, one that encourages you to drift away into a haze of images and scenes where spectacular beauty hides unseen danger. Intense and moving" (Grooves, USA). Here there are two new versions of two tracks from Cirque, When I Leave and Algae and Fungi.

The CD is 25 minutes long, with photography and design by Jon Wozencroft.

Artist ALUCIDNATION

Title AN INTRODUCTION TO ALUCIDNATION

Label BIG CHILL

UK Release Date 07 May 2001

CHILLEP002X 5027803440296 CDS £2.80

CHILLEP002 5027803440265 12" £2.80

Last year in the midst of the Big Chill Naxos 2000 an anthem was born. That track was Alucidnation’s ‘I’m not bad’, which is at long last now getting the release it deserves – on the Big Chill’s own label, naturally. Whether you are a dedicated chiller or not, rest assured that this track is going to get inside your head this year and, from there, work its way down into your heart. The time for the wider world to meet Alucidnation has come.

Bruce Bickerton is the one-man powerhouse behind Alucidnation, responsible for all the act’s music, photography, design and website. A soft-spoken, naturally chilled fellow with a good deal of the Yorkshireman about him, Bruce is precisely the kind of person who makes the Big Chill what it is. Underneath his laid-back demeanour is a veritable wealth of talent, imagination and humour - and a passionate devotion to music. His love of music can be traced right back to an early childhood steeped in piano lessons, his dad’s rock ‘n’ roll, and a deep appreciation of ELO that persists to this day.

These qualities shine through Alucidnation’s debut EP. Recorded, edited and mixed entirely at home, it is music that is clearly rooted in a very personal vision and experience of the world. And with its washes of breaking waves, Roland Juno chords, and deep bass rhythms, there could be no better introduction to that world than ‘Beautiful house’. While its title could be taken as a tribute to the deep house music to which Bruce is so devoted, it is simultaneously a loving evocation of his feelings for his grandmother’s house in West Wales. ‘A spiritual sort of place,’ Bruce describes it, and you can imagine it for yourself.

What is so charming about the music of Alucidnation is its domestic Englishness and simplicity. While so much of electronic music has been fuelled by a love affair with futuristic, abstract and sampled beats and pieces, Bruce’s soundscapes are rooted in more simple things.

This EP is a taster of whats to some on the LP titled ‘Aural Architecture’ due out later in the year.

Earth needs more people like him.

Press promotion is being dealt with by ZZonked who are expecting reviews in NME, 7, iDJ, DJ, Mixmag, Ministry, The Face, ID, Muzik, Wax, M8, Jockeyslut, Sleazenation, The Guardian, and others

Title SIDEWAYS EP

Label DIFFERENT DRUMMER

UK Release Date 07 May 2001

Cat # Barcode Fmt Dealer Price

DIFEP16 12" £2.90

This four track EP provides a taste of what's to come on Different Drummer's

excellent 'Sideways' compilation CD, released later this month.

Don't call it a bossa-hip-hop-lounge-dub-voodoo-electronic-guitar thing

because Sideways is primarily a collection of great songs. A trans-hemispherical collaboration between Phase 5's Round Trip Mars Records and the Different Drummer label, this collection has been produced by NZ artists from start to finish.

During a Rockers Hi Fi tour of NZ, in July 99, the idea for this compilation was

concocted between DJ Dick (Rockers Hi Fi) & DJ Stinky Jim (Unitone Hi

Fi/Phase 5/Bureau de Bashment), and responding to a surge of scintillating,

sideways-thinking local tune merchants, DJ Stinky Jim set about compiling

"Sideways".

The tracks are a range of quirky downbeat shufflers in a similar style to the

'Sunday Best' compilations. The appetite for the exotic is demonstrated right

from the start with the infectious, grin-inducing "Gigawati" - "Now a Major

Motion Picture" drops the tempo and rolls out the dub vibes with its space

echos and Ennio Morricone influences, whilst 'Hi Five' by Sola Rosa is a slice

of Pork-style downbeat bassy groove. The EP draws to a close with "Horse

Winning Without Rider" - a lo fi guitar epic which sounds like Coldplay on

'shrooms.

1 INTERNATIONAL OBSERVER - NOW A MAJOR

2 SOLA ROSA - HI FIVE

3 SJD - GIGAWATI
